“Touched by an Angel’s” Roma Downey Gets Her Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
Congratulations to “Touched by an Angel” star Roma Downey who got her Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame yesterday. Joined by her husband, Mark Burnett, the “Touched by an Angel” actress and Emmy Award-nominated producer was honored in front of a cheering crowd of fans.
Born in Derry, County Londonderry in Northern Ireland on May 6, 1960, Downey attended Thornhill College with plans to become a painter. But Downey got bit by the acting bug and sought classical training at the Drama School London. As a member of Dublin’s Abbey Players she toured the United States in “The Playboy of the Western World,” earning her a Helen Hayes Best Actress Award for the production’s Broadway run. She soon landed a key role on television, playing Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in the Emmy-winning miniseries “A Woman Named Jackie.” But it was her turn as the other-worldly Monica opposite Della Reese in the CBS series “Touched by an Angel” that is probably her best-known role.
Behind the scenes, Downey has served as a producer on television movies like “Borrowed Hearts” and “Second Honeymoon.” In 2009, she joined forces with her husband and fellow Walk of Famer, Burnett, to develop the 10-hour History channel docudrama “The Bible.” The production was watched by over 100 million people, was the number one downloaded series on iTunes and was nominated for the 2013 Primetime Emmy Award, Outstanding Miniseries or Movie. The power couples newest venture is a remaining of “Ben-Hur,” which opens on August 19, 2016.
